China wil snel vervolg op Kyoto accoord

"China would like the world to agree on a new framework for trading and investment in reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by 2008, and to see a longer-lasting commitment period.

U.N. climate talks in Nairobi from November 6-17 will kick off negotiations, but there are worries that delegates may struggle to even set a deadline for agreeing a new framework. The health of the carbon-trading market, worth $22 billion in the year through September and currently channeling huge amounts of investment to China, depends on a clear roadmap for its future, investors warn.

"We hope that by 2008, or at the latest 2009, we can reach an agreement, but it is not something that the Chinese government can resolve alone," said Gao Guangsheng, director general of the office of the National Coordination Committee for Climate Change."
